Health and Medical Beliefs in the Victorian Era

Cold air and foul smells caused illness.  Or so most believed.  This was the "miasma" theory.  Because disease was carried by bad smells, surgeons felt free to operate while wearing the same coat, growing ever more stiff with blood and body fluids, for years.  Joseph Lister, inventor of aseptic technique (the notion surgeons should wash their hands, don gloves, and avoid cross contamination while poking about in peoples' innards) once famously rebuked a physician who, after each surgery,… Continue

Nova Albion and changing my persona name (or: DAMN YOU KATE WINSLET)

So I spent this weekend at Nova Albion, my very first Steampunk convention, and had an absolutely wonderful time. As I am used to large, rowdy anime conventions, my expectations were quite off the mark with what I actually saw.

What I expected: tons of teenagers

What I found: a handful of little kids, mostly their 20s-ish parents, and a lot of their 40+ grandparents. Tons of older ladies and gentlemen!

What I expected: half naked teenage girls and boys…

A Few Universal Victorian Truths That Aren't Actually True

Feeling a little contrary, so here's some things that are often repeated about the Victorian era that aren't true:

Sometimes people were buried alive.   Not that anyone can discern, but there were rare cases of people who'd been declared dead reviving a few hours later.  Eventually the urban legend arose that folks were routinely pronounced dead, sealed in their coffin, and left to scream and scratch at the lid until they gave up the ghost for real.  This led to all… Continue

Some Fun Facts about Victorian England

Well ... I think they're fun, anyway.  Beta-readers for my Past Lives Trilogy will recognize some of these.

Pollution:  Most homes burned coal in their fireplaces, not wood.  And in the grander houses, virtually every room had a fireplace.  This is why London fog was usually yellow. And… Continue

Galvanic Conflagration Suppressor

It sounds like something Tesla would have come up with but apparently Harvard scientists are developing a way to put out fires with electricity. From the early 19th Century (or perhaps even guys like Ben Franklin in the 18th Century) knew that electrical fields could affect the movements of flames. No one knew how this was actually done and, I suppose, because no one could imagine the practical applications, no one actually pursued the matter. But a couple of Harvard Chemists that, in part,…

steampunk linkblog, March 29 2011

Hello! The book review and giveaway got pushed back a bit; it looks as if we may be doing several of them in April, so get ready to enter many contests!

I found a wonderful instance of steampunk influencing modern design; Adaptive Path discusses a "steampunk" design for cell phones in rural India as a more intuitive concept. This is really fascinating…
