Working out the biotech

Posted on October 9, 2014 at 5:42pm 3 Comments

The heroine of my Steampunk romance was in a near-fatal carriage accident as an adolescent, and her father, a brilliant surgeon, saved her life with some very unique biotech. I've been having fits trying to figure out how to give her prosthetics that weren't unwieldy and awful.

It turns out that the work has already been done! From "Bionic Woman" to 'bionics' to 'osseointegration' and…

Pitching fits

Ok, I just had a complete, wailing breakdown over Definitely Dead. You know what'll kill a romance novel? Lack of interpersonal conflict.

They like each other. They're two nice people who like each other and get along well. You cannot write an entire romance novel - or even a novella - about two nice people who like each other and get along well from the beginning.

So I'm going to take a break from DD and work on Runespell for…

Conference Tips

Posted on October 2, 2014 at 4:55pm 0 Comments

A friend who’s never been to a writing conference is headed out at the end of October, and she asked for tips from conference veterans. I haven’t been to a huge con in a loooong time, but I have enough experience to be dangerous. ;) So I gave her my own con-hacks.

Bring a sweater. Not kidding. Hotels are freaking freezing all the time. I don’t care if the conference is held in Houston in July, I always bring a sweater or wrap of some…

Release day tomorrow!

Posted on July 17, 2014 at 7:40pm 0 Comments

I know it's not Steampunk, but it's been a big project getting everything ready.

The contract expired on my very first published novella, so when the rights reverted to me, I decided to dip my toes into the self-publishing waters. Got a cover, fixed that damn typo that had bothered me for 7 yrs, and today I finally finished wrestling with different content providers to upload it.

Tomorrow is the official re-release of NOT QUITE DEAD, a paranormal romantic comedy set in…

Hello Sela,

I like your steampunk S. A steampunk trilogy sounds like a wonderful project. I'm planning to write a steampunk series of novellas during Nanowritmo with plans to have them selfpublished by spring.

Sela,

Re: Calling all Writers:

After careful consideration, I have decided to apply to our leadership to establish a new group for the purposes set forth in my discussion of yesterday. If it is approved, you will be able to tap into it at http://www.thesteampunkempire.com/group/scribblers-den. Start checking periodically when you find this. If it is disapproved, I will notify everyone by this medium. Fingers crossed! Hope you like it.

Ah, a fellow scribbler!  Welcome, fair lady, to our wonderful aviary.  We writers are a distinct minority here, though well-treated for all of that.  Please enjoy the sumptuous surroundings.  You will find this as friendly a group as any on the web, so dive into whatever tickles your fancy, and have a great stay with us.

All the best,

~ Jack "Blimprider" Tyler
